With recent US Supreme Court rulings, condemnation has taken on a new meaning for acquisition of property by governmental agencies.  Evaluation of the "fair market value" or the property being taken is complex and requires several expert specialties.  Engineers are now being utilized to assist the attorney of record, real estate expert, and others involved in a condemnation process.  Engineers are used in a variety of ways to determine if the property was in compliance with appropriate codes and permits before the taking and if a portion of the property will be remaining, what impacts, permits, construction cost estimates, etc. will be required to make the remaining property useful after the taking has been  made.
