Did you know that you car has a "Black Box"? Most vehicles (including commercial transports) come equipped with a data collection device, most commonly called an "Event Data Recorder (EDR)". Engineering Forensics Group, Inc. (EFG) has engineers and technicians who are certified to retrieve and interpret EDR data. We combine this information with our accident reconstruction data to provide a comprehensive solution to help explain the events of an accident.
Are all vehicles equipped with an EDR? No. Older model vehicles which do not have airbags are not equipped with EDRs. Most vehixles with airbags do have EDRs. However the data from some manufacturers is not readable due to proprietary constraints. The Federal Goverment is currently working to standardize the information contained within the EDR as well as make the data available from more automobile manufacturers. As this technology evolves, our engineers and technicians keep up to date on the legal aspects of the EDR and provide our customers with vital information on how this data is being viewed by the courts.
Data Retrieval: When securing the crash data, It's important to keep a chain of evidence in case the EDR is damaged. Our technician's video the extraction process and print a hard copy of the data upon retrieval to document what information was obtained. The information retrieved from the EDR combined with the known crash data provides a complete solution to the events of the accident. EFG's CDR services is just one more way we are helping our clients gain the upper hand in the litigation process. For a list of vehicles equipped with EDR technology and that are accessible, please contact us at EFG.
